3 Things to Know About Brain Injuries after an Iowa Car Accident

Back to Articles

Posted by Tim Semelroth

Be on the lookout for a potential brain injury if you’ve been involved in a recent car crash in Iowa. Think back on the accident. Did you hit your head? Did you lose consciousness? Are you unable to remember some details what happened immediately before, during or after the crash? If so, you may have suffered a brain injury, and should take these three important steps:

1.  See a Doctor Soon

A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is one of the most common injuries suffered in a car accident.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are the third overall leading cause of TBI.

Head injuries can have devastating consequences and should not be taken lightly.  After you’ve been in a serious car crash, you should be examined by a doctor right away. If you can, take an ambulance from the crash scene. It’s better to rule out a head injury than to leave one undiagnosed.

Brain injuries don’t always show themselves right away after a crash.  It can be hours, days, or even weeks before any symptoms materialize.  If you’ve been injured in an accident, watch for the following symptoms. They may be signs of potential traumatic brain injury. See a doctor right away if you experience:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Vision problems
  • Memory issues
  • Emotional changes or distress

2.  Treat Your Injuries Until Your Doctor Says You’re Healed

Each individual heals differently after a brain injury. It could be months or even years before you’re completely healed from your injury – or you may have an injury that will last for the rest of your life.

If so, you will probably need treatment for those lifelong injuries.  This future treatment must be factored into a fair settlement amount.  That is why you should not settle your case until your doctor has said that you are healed, or as healed as you’re going to get.

Keep seeing your doctors for as long and as often as you need.  Your medical records will be important evidence when you are ready to discuss settlement of your claim.

3.  Talk to a Knowledgeable Iowa Car Accident Attorney

It’s a good idea to speak with an Iowa personal injury lawyer if you’ve suffered traumatic brain injury in a car accident.  An experienced car crash lawyer knows that TBI must be taken seriously and that it needs time to heal.  A good lawyer won’t allow the other driver’s insurance company to bully you into settling your case before you’re healed.
