Get Straight Answers to Your Iowa SSDI Questions
There are two main requirements you must meet to qualify for SSDI benefits:
- You Must Be Considered Disabled: According to the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) definition of disability, you must have a severe medical impairment or impairments that 1) prevent you from doing the type of work that you used to do and 2) prevent you from doing any other type of work. Unless you are blind, you are not allowed to participate in substantial gainful activity (SGA) in excess of $1,690 per month in 2026.
- You Must Have Worked Long Enough and Recently Enough: Social Security law says that you can only get disability benefits if 1) you’ve paid enough money into the system while you were working and 2) at least some of that work was performed recently. If you’re over 31 years old, you likely meet this requirement if you’ve worked 10 full years in your lifetime and have worked within 5 years prior to becoming disabled.
We encourage anyone who’s become disabled to apply for Social Security Disability benefits as soon as they can.
The Social Security Administration has a backlog of applications to review. It can take more than five months before a decision is made about your claim. If you wait to apply for Social Security Disability benefits, it can also affect the amount of back pay you receive.
If you qualify for SSDI benefits, you may be able to receive back pay to account for the delay in processing disability claims. How much you receive in back pay for SSDI benefits is determined by two things:
- When You Became Disabled: Also known as your onset date, the date you became disabled is important because the SSA will begin disability benefits the sixth month after you’ve become disabled.
- When You Submitted Your Application: The date you apply is important because the SSA will pay you back benefits for up to one year before your application was filed.
Unfortunately, many SSDI applicants face the disappointment of having their claims denied. Know that you are not alone. Common reasons why SSDI claims get denied include:
- Lack of sufficient medical evidence
- Failure to meet the list of impairments from the SSA
- Inconsistent or incomplete work history
- Failure to follow recommended treatment plans
If your Social Security Disability claim was denied, our Iowa SSDI attorneys can help. RSH Legal can provide guidance on meeting the SSD requirements or exploring alternative programs like Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
You do not need an attorney for your initial application for Social Security Disability benefits. You should reach out to our Iowa Social Security Disability lawyers if your initial claim is denied.
If your disability claim has been denied, you will need to appeal the decision. The deadline is within 60 days of receiving the denial letter.
A Social Security Disability attorney will work within that 60-day deadline to gather and submit additional evidence for your case, review your file from the SSA, conduct legal research about your disability case, and help you prepare for your disability hearing in front of a judge.

The Benefits SSDI Can Provide Injured Workers
Approved SSDI benefits provide a monthly cash payment, past-due back pay, and Medicare eligibility after 24 months, and the more you paid into the system while working, the more you will receive. If your disability is also connected to a work injury, you may also qualify for Iowa workers’ compensation at the same time.
Your SSD benefit payments could be reduced by an offset depending on the language of a workers’ compensation settlement. Our firm can help address an offset in your benefits.
- Necessary medical treatment
- Future healthcare needs
- Wage replacement
- Permanent disability benefits
- Monthly cash benefit
- Exempt from Iowa state income tax
- Medicare enrollment after 24 months
- Potential partial benefit payments to dependents
Without a lawyer, your combined workers’ compensation and disability benefits could be reduced if they exceed 80% of the amount of your average earnings while you were still employed.
