3 Tips From an Iowa Insurance Agent Who Has Been in a Serious Car Accident

In 2015, Theodore (“Tedd”) Kipper and two of his co-workers were in a head-on crash on I-80 while on the job.  He suffered serious injuries in the crash and called RSH Legal to help him get fair compensation.  We were honored to help Tedd with both his auto accident and workers’ compensation claims.

Now an insurance agent, Tedd believes the crash has given him a unique perspective.  It has made him more empathetic to his clients’ needs and understanding of the frustrations that can come along with accident claims.

Here are three tips that he suggests you follow:

1. It’s important to be well-covered.

This means having more than just the minimum amount for liability coverage, which is the type of insurance that pays for bodily injury and property damage if you are at fault for an accident.  It also means carrying underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage, which will pay your bills in case the person who hits you has little or no insurance.

Because everyone’s situation is different, contact your insurance agent to find out what your insurance limits should be.

2. Review your policy with your insurance agent at least once every two years – or every time a major life change occurs.

As Tedd says, “life changes” – you buy a new car or house, get married or divorced, or have a baby. When these major life events happen, your life, auto, or other type of insurance may need to change too.  Talk to your agent about anything new that has happened recently.

If nothing big has changed in the last couple of years, it’s a good idea to revisit your policies anyway – just to make sure you’ve got the right coverage.

3. Legal advice is important if you have been hurt in a car accident – or if you have hurt someone else.

You may not need an attorney after you’ve been in a car crash.  However, you don’t know for sure until you’ve spoken with an experienced car accident attorney. If you’ve been hurt in a car accident while on the job, that can complicate things even more.

That’s why it’s always a good idea to give a lawyer a call.  Most personal injury attorneys offer free initial consultations, so you can speak with someone without it costing you money.
