Who Are You?

My name is Jason Butt. I grew up in small-town Iowa and still reside in that same eastern Iowa community with my wife and our four children. My family settled in this area when Iowa was still a territory, and I am a proud seventh generation Iowan.

I am a trial attorney and have practiced civil litigation since 2001. I knew early on in my career that I wanted to handle trial work. Following more than twenty years of legal practice in the area of insurance defense, I changed the focus of my practice to represent people who have suffered serious injury, disability, or death. I enjoy being a trial attorney and appreciate the opportunity to help my clients during a difficult time in their lives.

What Led You to This Work?

There are many factors that led me to becoming a lawyer, but I was initially attracted to the competition offered by the practice of law. I have a lifelong love of all things related to sports. In part, the law reminds me of sports, as they both involve competition or conflict in a controlled rules driven environment. It was this competition that initially attracted me to the law and then to litigation. I have always believed, and still believe as one of my core values, that a lawyer’s job is to fight for their client. Throughout my career, I have loved the competition involved with fighting for my clients. Whether a motion, trial, or other hard-fought argument for a client, it is truly gratifying.

As my career progressed, I found that I am driven by more than just competition. The fight is much more satisfying when it aligns with my values. I spent over twenty years of my career practicing insurance defense. I would occasionally represent injured people, but most of my clients were businesses, corporations, and insurance companies. I developed great relationships with my clients and fought on their behalf, but it always felt like something was missing. My practice felt more fulfilling when I represented individuals.  I decided that I needed to make a change. I know now that the reason was because my practice did not align with another core value—I want to help people. I enjoy using my experience on the defense to help my current clients and I find more satisfaction fighting for people in need of help.

Who Do You Represent?

I only represent people who have suffered injury or death because of others’ negligence.

What Is the Favorite Part of Your Job?

Without doubt, the best part of my job is when I help my clients obtain a favorable result.

What Do You Do When Not Working as An Attorney?

My four children are outgoing and involved in a lot of activities. This keeps me incredibly busy and on the go every day. I love to attend my kids’ activities but have also participated as a coach or assistant coach for many youth sports teams. I enjoy working with the young athletes and value this time with my kids.

What Motivates You to Do What You Do?

I am fortunate to have numerous sources of motivation, but one issue has always remained a constant motivator related to my legal career. It has always been important to me that I remain genuine, honest, and practice law in an ethical manner. I am also absolutely dedicated to practicing in a cordial, respectful, and professional fashion. I am motivated every day by a desire to remain “Iowa Nice” and still zealously advocate for a client in a professional manner.
