When Will You Receive Your Social Security Disability Benefit Check?

Back to Articles

Posted by Corey Luedeman

After a long appeal process, you have finally been approved for Social Security Disability benefits.  But when will you actually receive that money?

Your Disability Payments Take a While to Process

Unfortunately, you may have to wait 2 months or more before you receive your monthly Social Security Disability payment.  Any back payments that you are entitled to receive could take even longer.  The time that has passed between the date of your approval and your first benefit check should be reflected in back pay.  Ask your Social Security Disability attorney to take a look and make sure your back pay shows this.

It’s important to make sure your attorney’s fees were taken out of your benefit amount as well.  This should occur automatically, but it’s still a good idea to double check.  The Social Security Administration (SSA) occasionally makes clerical errors.

SSDI Payments Are Delayed, Even If You Are Approved Right Away

If you have applied and been approved for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits right away, be aware that there is a five-month delay between the date you were disabled and the date you begin receiving disability payments.  This is true no matter what conditions you may have.  That means even if you apply and are approved the next week, you still have to wait five months before SSDI payments begin.

If you have applied and been approved for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), there is no delay between the date you were disabled and the date you begin receiving payments.

There are a few ways you can receive your monthly payment:

  • Through direct deposit into your banking account.
  • Through a Direct Express® debit card.
  • Through an Electronic Transfer Account.

Most recipients do not receive a paper check and need to utilize one of the 3 options above.

SSI payments are sent out on or about the first of each month, while SSDI payments are sent out depending on the recipient’s birthday.

Why is it Taking So Long to Receive My Disability Money?

If you haven’t starting receiving disability benefits within 90 days of being approved by the SSA, talk to your Social Security Disability attorney.  They will contact Social Security on your behalf and ask why there is a delay.
